Art Direction for St. Edwards Mural in downtown Brooklyn
Stonewall at 108 St. Edwards Street is an affordable housing development in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC, serving the elderly LGBTQ+ community adjacent to Fort Greene Park. The project called for large-scale exterior artwork across the South elevation—a neighborhood landmark and a statement of identity for residents and the surrounding community. Partnering with Wxllspace and developer Westhab, I provided art direction for artist Darion Fleming, shaping a concept that satisfied every stakeholder and guiding it through to a finished, photorealistic mural. The composition stacks a child's world skyward: a young girl gazes up at a tower of books balancing a globe, a graduation-capped teddy bear, and a bird perched at the very top—a vivid meditation on learning, aspiration, and the futures a community builds for its children.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Selected an artist whose nature-forward style fit the community's identity and gave the development a distinct sense of place
Worked with artist and stakeholders on concept development, design approvals, and installation
Translated the building's full exterior wall into a large-scale, site-specific composition
IMPACT:
Gave residents a vibrant, welcoming landmark unique to their community
Strengthened the development's visual identity and curb presence in the Fort Greene Neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC
Demonstrated how public art can enrich affordable and senior housing, not just market-rate or commercial development
